The original mid-80s North of England jazz/soul/latin DJ crew Chico Malo, Gip Dammone and Lubi Jovanovic, later to become The DIG! Family with Eric Speake (aka DJ Ez), reunite to spin music together for the first time since December 2001!
A friendship formed in 1985 in Leeds that became a tight business collective, we went on to run some of the best jazz/soul/funk/latin nights in the city for the next 15 years - Yardbird Suite/Casa Latina/The Cooker/Filling The Gap - and had 2 record labels and an agency as well as offshoot monthly sessions in Manchester, London, Darlington and Sheffield.
It was a great ride for 15 years but in December 2001, we played our last set together in our clubnight Yardbird Suite at The Wardrobe, Leeds. Everyone moved on to other things. Now, 10th May, we are back for one night of mayhem with that same nutville devil may care attitude we had in 1985 - a bottle of JD, a bagfull of tunes and the open-minded mentality where jazz, funk, soul, latin, hiphop, reggae, boogie and afrobeat CAN be played in the same room in one night! Ecelctic is often banded about today re: DJ sets but many of them are just messy.
Come see and hear some pioneers of the whole freestyle jazzual soulful strut thing do it like it should be done - with love! It should be a hell of night - make sure you get there early as Smokestack holds 125 people maximum!
