Salvo's celebrates 30 years as a Headingley institution in 2006. Since opening its doors, it has been pulling the crowds with its infectious family atmosphere and gutsy Italian food.
The kitchen combines local Yorkshire produce with directly imported Italian specialities for a lengthy menu that is a happy mix of old-style favourites and more contemporary dishes. Antipasti include buffalo Mozzarella with slow-roast tomatoes, capers and char-grilled aubergines, as well as steamed mussels with chorizo, coriander and green chillies, while mains (secondi piatti) could feature fillet of sea bass with spiced potatoes, pancetta, rocket and Parmesan, wild mushroom risotto, and fillet of beef in red wine sauce topped with a chunk of Gorgonzola.
There's also a full contingent of pizzas and pasta (macheroni with sliced veal meatloaf and Roman Pecorino cheese, for example), plus old-fashioned desserts like pannacotta with winter berries and profiteroles with chocolate sauce.
Two doors from the restaurant is Salvo's Salumeria – a genuine Italian deli/café where you can call in for a coffee and bite to eat, as well as stocking up on provisions from artisan Italian producers.
