At Salvo's we take great care and pride in where we source our ingredients. Wherever possible we use local suppliers. We do not like the notion of buying a product that may have come from the locality then travels half way around the country to end up back on our doorstep. It just doesn't sit right with us. The following are some of the many businesses we source products from.
David has been our fresh fruit and vegetable buyer for 25 years now. David used to trade from his shop Barretts of Headingley with his late father Ken from his premises on Otley Road where the Oxfam Furniture shop now stands. Mr Barrett senior was a real Headingley character. Many Headingley residents of old will remember him standing outside the shop , standing under the row of game and pheasant hanging from a pole outside his shop , and passing out bits of fruit and banter to both passers by and to motorists queuing on Otley Road .
David has a strong relationship with local farmers so , as well as sourcing from the wholesale markets fresh rocket from Battipaglia and plum tomatoes from Salerno our home town in Italy , we get local home grown vegetables from farmers who deliver direct to him .
David relocated his business to a retail shop in Cookridge a few years ago. Sadly, as a consequence of the increasing propensity of people to shop in supermarkets, he closed the retail side of his business in 2004 . However he still provides a home delivery service to people who don't need to have their cucumbers all uniformly straight and the exact the same length and colour and appreciate the meaning of real tasting food. He can be contacted for home deliveries on 0113 2674414.
Salvo's business relationship with Richard Setchfield goes back to the late 70's . Infact his wife Carole used to work at Salvo's many years ago.
A family business established 36 years ago, Sykes House was originally a farm rearing cattle and pigs with its own abattoir. It became a farm shop and, no longer rearing livestock, by 1982 was specialising in locally sourced meat, game, and poultry.
